Keep Your Hummingbird Feeders Clean & Healthy
A clean feeder helps attract more hummingbirds and supports their health. Nectar can spoil quickly, especially during warm weather, so regular cleaning is important.
Cleaning Tips
- Empty and refill nectar frequently. In hot weather, nectar may need to be changed every 1–2 days. During cooler weather, every 3–5 days is usually sufficient.
- Clean feeders every time you refill them. Wash all parts with hot water and a bottle brush to remove residue.
- For a deeper cleaning, soak the feeder in a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Rinse thoroughly before refilling.
- Pay special attention to feeding ports, where mold and bacteria can develop.
- If you notice cloudy nectar, black spots, mold, or insects inside the feeder, clean it immediately and replace the nectar.
- Avoid using soap whenever possible, as residue can remain behind and may be harmful to birds.
Can I Make My Own Hummingbird Nectar?
Homemade hummingbird nectar can be made from sugar and water. For current preparation guidelines, visit trusted resources such as the National Audubon Society or Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
You can also choose a convenient ready-to-use nectar or nectar concentrate mix. Whether you use homemade nectar or a prepared product, keeping feeders clean and nectar fresh is the most important step for hummingbird health.
Hot Weather Reminder
Arizona's summer temperatures can cause nectar to spoil quickly. Place feeders in a shaded location when possible and check them frequently to keep nectar fresh and safe for visiting hummingbirds.
