Jasmine can be a wonderfully fragrant addition to your garden. Below are some of our favorite varieties for growing in the Metro Phoenix Area (often available year-round):
(Jasminum sambac) - (a) One of the best "True" Jasmines, lush foliage and vine-like growth offers intensely fragrant, small white flowers that open at night and close in the morning. This is the variety that Jasmine tea is made from. Blooms fade to pink as they age. Enjoys partial to full sun. Prefers regular watering to maintain evenly moist soil - weekly, or more often. Blooms summer into fall; year-round in warm climates. Fast growing to 6 to 8 feet tall, 3 to 4 feet wide with support. Wonderful as a border, in containers, as an espalier, in mass plantings and in Urban Gardens.
Grand Duke Arabian Jasmine
(Jasminum sambac 'Grand Duke') - (b) Button-like double flowers boast wonderfully fragrant clusters of creamy-white blooms often used in Hawaiian leis. Enjoys partial to full sun. Prefers regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. Blooms spring through summer. Slow growing to 6 to 10 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Wonderful in containers, as an espalier or in an Urban Garden.
Summer Soul® Arabian Jasmine
(Jasminum sambac 'Monhariklia' Plant Patent #27,171) - (c) Fragrance will fill the garden from large, highly-scented, fully double-flower blooms. Has a compact form with glossy evergreen foliage. Enjoys full to partial sun. Prefers evenly moist soil and regular watering - weekly, or more often. Quick grower to 6 to 8 feet tall, 3 to 4 feet wide. Easy to care for. Blooms spring and summer. Wonderful in containers, mass plantings, as a hedge, border or houseplant.
Asian Star Jasmine
(Trachelospermum asiaticum) - (d) This vigorous twining or sprawling vine boasts fragrant, small, creamy-yellow blooms. Enjoys partial to full sun and blooms in summer. Prefers regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. As a groundcover - 1 to 2 feet high, spreading to 10 to 12 feet. Easy to care for and wonderful as groundcover, border, in a container, as an espalier, in mass planting and more...
(Trachelospermum jasminoides) - (e) Prized for its very fragrant, star-shaped, white flowers. Wonderful for positioning near a patio, terrace or entry for its enjoyable fragrance. Enjoys partial to full sun. Prefers regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat or containers. Twining stems reach 18 to 20 feet tall; trails 1 to 2 feet tall as a groundcover. Blooms spring into summer. Also great as an espalier. Fire Wise.
(Jasminum polyanthum) - (f) This fast-growing evergreen is cherished for its magnificent display of intensely fragrant pinkish-white blooms. Enjoys full sun and flowers spring through early summer. Prefers regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. Strong-growing to 20 ft. Wonderful climbing over trellis or arbor, as a groundcover or in containers.
