Hauntingly Beautiful Garden
Hauntingly Beautiful Garden
Bring a little spooky season into your garden.
For those of us who love Halloween and all its spooky charm, the garden can get in on the fun, too. Pair deep, almost-black foliage with ghostly whites, electric chartreuse and unexpected pops of orange or red for combinations that feel dramatic, beautiful¬–and just a little eerie.
Use these color combinations to create a container, garden bed or entryway that's wonderfully eerie.

Dark & Dramatic
Start with the shadows.
Black, deep burgundy and near-black doliage create a moody foundation that makes everything around them seem brighter and more dramatic.
LOOK FOR:Black mondo grass • Dark heuchera • Dark-leaved aeonium • Deep purple pansies • Dark coleus

Ghostly White & Silver
Add something that almost glows.
White flowers and silvery foliage create an eerie contrast against dark-leaves–and can become even more beautiful as daylight begins to fade.
LOOK FOR:White cyclamen • Dusty miller • Lamb's ear • White pansies • Silver foliage

Wickedly Bright
A shot of chartreuse makes the whole combination come alive.
Acid green and yellow-green foliage looks almost electric next to black and burgundy, adding just enough strange to make the combination interesting.
LOOK FOR:Creeping Jenny • Chartreuse coleus • Lime-green foliage

A Flicker of Fire
Finish with a flash of orange or deep red.
Use these colors sparingly and they'll jump out against the darker foliage like little sparks of flame.
LOOK FOR:Orange marigolds • Orange or red • Snapdragons

The Magic Is in the Mix
Choose two, three or all four.
Pair black foliage with white flowers for something sophisticated and ghostly. Add chartreuse for an unexpected jolt of color. Or bring in orange and red for a combination that feels unmistakably Halloween. Try the look in a container by the front door, tuck a few contrasting plants among your pumpkins, or work the colors into an existing garden bed.
There are no rules here. That's part of the fun!
