Understanding Hydrangea Types

Bigleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla)

The most recognizable hydrangeas, bigleaf varieties are loved for their large mophead or delicate lacecap blooms and long flowering season. Many varieties bloom repeatedly throughout summer and produce blue flowers in acidic soils or pink flowers in alkaline soils. These hydrangeas thrive in morning sun with afternoon shade and are ideal for borders, foundation plantings, and cottage gardens.

Panicle Hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata)

Panicle hydrangeas are prized for their cone-shaped flower clusters, exceptional hardiness, and sun tolerance. Their blooms often emerge creamy white or lime green before aging to blush pink in late summer and fall. These vigorous varieties make excellent specimen plants, flowering hedges, and cut flowers.

Oakleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia)

Known for their distinctive oak-shaped foliage, oakleaf hydrangeas provide beauty through every season. Large white flower clusters mature to rosy tones while foliage develops brilliant red and bronze fall color. Their textured bark also adds winter interest, making them outstanding landscape shrubs year-round.

Mophead vs. Lacecap Blooms

Mophead hydrangeas produce large, rounded flower clusters packed with showy blooms, while lacecap hydrangeas feature flatter flower heads with delicate outer florets surrounding tiny center flowers. Both styles bring unique texture and charm to the garden and are equally attractive in fresh or dried floral arrangements.
