There are many benefits to using raised garden beds. Elevated garden beds are available in a variety of materials, sizes and styles. There is sure to be a raised bed garden to meet your needs, and if not, you can easily learn how to build a raised garden bed out of materials you may have lying around your home.

Types

Pre-made raised garden beds are available for purchase in a variety of sizes and materials ranging from wood to recycled materials. You can combine different sizes and shapes to fit just about any location. You can also make your own elevated garden beds using materials you may already have lying around. While we recommend using cedar or redwood since they are more rot resistant and won’t break down as easily as other material, you can use anything from rocks to old pallets lined with burlap.

Location

When selecting a location for your raised garden bed find a spot that will provide more sun in the winter than in the summer and gets about 6-8 hours of sun a day.

Height

The ideal height for your raised garden beds is at least 1 foot. If you are constructing your own raised bed garden, you can easily add dimension and interest to your garden by building beds of different heights.

Raised Garden Beds Edibles

Consider the location of your raised garden bed and how easy it will be to access your plants. If you have access all the way around, try planning taller plants in the middle. If you can only access one side, plant taller plants in the back. Also take into consideration when your plants will be ready for harvest. Try to plan your garden so you have something to harvest all season long.
