It's true, there are many many beautiful plants, trees and shrubs that can be found in our garden centers so we thought we'd help by selecting 10 outstanding must haves for your California home.


Kangaroo paw or anigozanthos multicolor perennial1. Kangaroo Paws

Anigozanthos flavidus - A tough and durable perennial with strap-like leaves and tall flower stalks. Kangaroo Paws have unusual velvety, paw-shaped flowers available in an assortment of colors (red, pink, yellow). They make great container plants and interesting cut flowers.  Ideal for Mediterranean Inspired Gardens.

  • Moderate growing; reaches 2 to 5 ft. tall, 2 to 3 ft. wide.
  • Excellent in Containers, Mass Planting and in Rock Garden
  • This plant loves full sun

Care - Provide average well drained soil. Drought tolerant once established, but prefers regular moisture when flowering. Pruning time: fall after flowering.

We have a stunning selection right now!  Clematis is known as "Queen of Vines," and is one of the most beautiful of all vines for training onto vertical treillage. They are also used as ground covers to cascade down banks and slopes, and to dangle off retaining wall edges.  Full sun, Partial sun

Care - Thrives in well-drained, lightly alkaline soil, with roots sheltered and top growth in the sun. Mulch to conserve moisture. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish root system; reduce frequency once established. Feed regularly beginning in spring. Prune spent flowers to promote repeat bloom. Provide trellis or arbor support.


Elijah blue fescue grass perennial3. Elijah Blue Fescue Grass

This is one of our favorites!  The Elijah Blue Fescue offers an icy blue color of lovely clumping ornamental grass that holds handles nicely in the heat of our summer.  Perfectly suited for edging borders or mass planting as a groundcover.  Its silver-blue coloring and fine texture is appreciated in both Asian gardens and the drought-resistant landscape. Most often planted near rock gardens, around landscape boulders.

Care - thrives in average to very lean, loose, well-drained soils.  Water regularly until established and then reduce frequency.  This grass will tolerate moderate drought.  Remove old, faded foliage before new emerges.

Beautiful, hardy, and available in an assortment of colors, hydrangeas are a favorite in California landscapes.  Perfect for areas that receive dappled shade. Eye catching in containers or as a focal point. Plant in acidic soil to maintain the deep blue blooms or alkaline soil for pink blooms.  Choose from these 5 varieties:

Great in borders, containers, as mass plantings and in rock gardens. Ideal for water-wise gardens!

Carpet Roses are a great way to add lovely color with little maintenance. They love the sun and require a minimum of 6 hours of full sun and look great in containers, in borders, mass plantings, in urban gardens, and as ground cover. They will bloom for you spring through fall.

Care - Thrives in enriched, loamy, well-drained soil. Space plants 3 ft. apart as groundcover. Water deeply, regularly in first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Tolerates brief drought, when established. Fertilize in spring and summer. Prune back by 1/3 annually.
