Building a Summer Garden: How to Get Started

Summer is coming and you know what that means: you’re going to be spending a lot of your time in your garden enjoying the sun. The days are warmer and the sun is out longer; you should enjoy the hard work you put into your yard. Here are three items to help build your amazing summer garden.

3 Summer Garden Must-Haves

  1. Water Fountain
You may not have enough room to add a pool, but a small water fountain can be a wonderful summer garden addition. Click herefor 15 charming DIY backyard fountains to add to your landscape.
  1. FoxFarm Soil
This is the ultimate potting soil—it includes everything your plants need, in one bag. Ocean Forest® is a powerhouse blend of premium earthworm castings, bat guano, and sea-going fish and crab meal. Aged forest products, sandy loam and sphagnum peat moss give Ocean Forest® its light, aerated texture. Start with Ocean Forest® and watch your plants come alive! This soil is perfect for containers and ready to use right out of the bag. Ocean Forest® is pH adjusted at 6.3 to 6.8 to allow for optimum fertilizer uptake. There’s no need for nitrogen fertilizers at first; instead try an organic blend like FoxFarm Big Bloom® Liquid Plant Food to encourage strong branching and a sturdy, healthy growth habit.
  1. Bonsai Blue Jacaranda
A new truly dwarf Jacaranda with showy, large, deep purple tubular spring flowers will bring your outdoor space to life. An ideal small specimen tree for today's smaller gardens, it’s equally useful as a large border accent or in decorative pots on terrace or patio. Bright green, fern-like foliage takes well to pruning and is remarkably heat and drought tolerant. This plant needs enriched, well-drained soil. Water it regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. It needs less frequent, but deep watering during growing season when it’s established; it also tolerates periods of drought. Remember to fertilize before new growth begins in spring, too. It may be pruned annually to maintain the desired size; pruning time is in the late winter. A summer garden is best enjoyed with a calming and attractive water fountain, the right soil to grow your plants and gorgeous flowers to look at.
