At SummerWinds Nursery, we believe that gardening connects us more deeply to the Earth—and with that connection comes responsibility. We're committed to growing a more sustainable furture, from the products we offer to the way we operate every day.

Our Commitment

We're working to phase out synthetic products with natural and organic alternatives that are both safe and effective. Sometimes, finding the right replacements for every gardening need takes longer than we'd like—but the gardening industry is making steady progress, and so are we. We're actively exploring the best solutions to bring our customers in both California and Arizona.

Each state we serve has its own climate and regulations, so we evaluate products regionally. What works well in one location may not be suitable—or approved for use in another region—due to agricultural or environmental considerations. That's why we focus on offering safe, effective options tailored to the needs of each specific area.

We're continuously working to reduce our environmental impact and support the health of our communities, customers, and the planet.

Here Are Just a Few of the Steps We've Taken:

  • A Bag of SummerWinds Organic Potting Soil & a Bag of SummerWinds Organic Planting Mix with a small plant start in a little pile of dirtNatural & Organic Garden Products: We offer a wide variety of natural and organic soils, fertilizers, and garden amendments to help customers garden more sustainably—from the ground up. Most of our lawn foods are now organic (all in California, most in Arizona), and nearly all of our repellents are made with natural ingredients.
  • Eco-Friendly Products: UBQ recycled pots—made from materials that would otherwise end up in landfills—are now available at all Arizona stores and nearly all California locations.
  • Better Water Use: We've added new DRAMM watering carts to all of our stores to help us water more efficiently.
  • Pollinator Protection: We've eliminated neonicotinoids in our California stores and are actively working to do the same in Arizona.
  • Sourcing Responsibly: Whenevery possible, we source our green goods locally by region to reduce transportation emissions and support local growers.
  • Reducing Paper Waste: We've shifted to e-documents, online job applications, and digital benefits enrollment for our team. We're also transitioning to e-invoices and ACH transfers with vendors whenever possible.
  • Internal Sustainability: From recycling programs to cutting back on excess branded merchandise (SWAG), we're making small changes behind the scenes that add up over time.
  • Ongoing Education: We provide seasonal product knowledge training so our team stays informed about new plants and gardening products—and continues to grow and share their expertise.
