Growing a More Sustainable Future

At SummerWinds Nursery, gardening is at the heart of what we do—and it naturally connects us to the environment around us. That connection matters. It shapes how we think about the products we carry, the plants we grow, and the choices we make every day.

We’re always working toward more sustainable ways of doing things. Not all at once, and not perfectly—but thoughtfully, step by step.

A Practical Approach to Natural & Organic Gardening

Over the past several years, we’ve been steadily shifting our product assortment toward more natural and organic options. Whenever we can, we prioritize products that are better for the environment and still deliver strong, reliable results.

At the same time, we know performance matters. In cases where organic solutions aren’t yet as effective, we may still offer a limited number of conventional options—while continuing to look for better alternatives. Our goal is to be honest about what works and to offer products that gardeners can count on in our unique growing conditions.

We’re also investing in our own SummerWinds-branded products, giving us more control over quality, consistency, and value. From soils developed with trusted partners to durable, easy-to-use tools, everything we offer is chosen with real gardening success in mind.

Here are some of the ways this approach shows up day to day:

Natural & Organic Garden Products

We carry a wide range of organic soils, fertilizers, and amendments to support healthier gardens from the ground up. All lawn foods in our California stores are now organic, and we’re continuing to expand organic options in Arizona. Nearly all of our repellents use natural ingredients, and we’re always looking for safe, effective solutions.

Low-Water-Use & Native Plants

We offer plants well-suited to our regional climates, including low-water-use and native varieties. These plants require less water and help support pollinators and beneficial wildlife.

We’ve eliminated neonicotinoids in our California stores and are working toward the same in Arizona.

Eco-Friendly Products

UBQ recycled pots—made from materials that would otherwise go to landfills—are now available in all stores.

Better Water Use

Watering carts help us care for plants more efficiently and reduce unnecessary water use throughout our garden centers.

Sourcing Responsibly

Whenever possible, we source plants locally. This helps ensure they’re adapted to our climate, reduces transportation impact, and supports local growers.

Reducing Paper Waste

We’ve moved many processes online, including job applications, employee documents, and benefits enrollment, and we’re expanding digital invoicing and payments.

Behind-the-Scenes Changes

From recycling programs to reducing excess branded giveaways, we’re making small operational changes that add up over time.

Ongoing Education

Our team receives regular training on plants and products, so we can share clear, practical guidance with our customers.

Always Learning, Always Improving

Sustainability isn’t a finish line—it’s something we keep working toward. As new products, practices, and ideas emerge, we’re paying attention and adapting where it makes sense.

We’re proud of the progress we’ve made so far and committed to continuing that work—alongside the gardeners and communities we serve in California and Arizona.

At SummerWinds, we’re here to help you grow—with confidence.  At SummerWinds, We Guarantee Success!
