| The Ruth Bancroft Garden |
Walnut Creek, California Developed by Mrs. Bancroft over the past 40 years, this two-and-one-half- acre dry garden is nationally recognized as one of the finest American gardens and displays an extraordinary collection of succulents and cacti. The Ruth Bancroft Garden was the first project assisted by the Garden Conservancy. In helping to protect this work of art, the Conservancy created the first known conservation easement granted on a private garden. The garden conservation easement defines the elements that make The Ruth Bancroft garden a significant work of garden art, and sets up a methodology to protect those features. The Conservancy assisted in masterplanning for the garden, to assure that the public would be able to enjoy its unique beauty. The garden is owned and supported by a locally led nonprofit organization established by the Garden Conservancy. In 2002, the Conservancy placed a horticulturist in the garden through its fellowship program to develop an botanical inventory program and assist in the management of the landscape.

| UCSC Arboretum |
Situated on what is now the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz and what was originally part of the vast land holdings of pioneer settler Henry Cowell, the Arboretum occupies one of the most propitious horticultural sites in the world. The climatic and topographic diversity is such as to allow experimentation with almost every species that might be grown along the coast between San Diego and Crescent City, and the diversity of the soils--the underlying rock includes granite, schist, limestone, and several types of sandstone--can scarcely be matched anywhere. The Arboretum continues to augment and maintain these collections: Australia, California, South Africa, New Zealand, The Eucalyptus Grove, The Aroma Garden, Conifers, Primitive Flowering Plants, Rare Fruit Exhibit, The Laurasian Forest, Cactus & Succulent Garden, The South American Section, Natives-Come-First Garden They are enduring value to researchers, instructors, horticulturalists, artists, and the general public. Though still a "young" Arboretum, it has become known as one of the great gardens of the world.
